The CRA Impersonation Fraud

CRA impersonation scam refers to an old scam that keeps on being updated with every technology and strategy. It is always one of the most frequently reported scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC).

Operation How it Works

  1. The criminal calls, emails or texts the victim.
  2. The fraudsters pose to be members of the Canada Revenue Agency and tell the victim that he or she owes back funds.
  3. There are intimidations: they can be arrested, prosecuted, or even expelled.
  4. The scammer also requires immediate payment by either Gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer.
  5. Sometimes the victims are redirected to bogus CRA websites or voice recordings that appear legitimate.
  6. This is not just a cold calling. The scammers usually get a legitimate look by employing caller ID spoofing, presentational emails, and heightened pressure.

Why This Scam of the Week is so dangerous?

The given scam is so successful as it is based on the authority, fear, and urgency. It aims at Canadians at or near tax time when CRA communications are more typical and ordinary.

The people that are most commonly targeted are seniors, immigrants, and new tax filers, but simply anyone can be a victim.

New Data Snaps:

  • In 2024, more than 7 400 reports of scams related to CRA were registered at the CAFC.
  • Losses over CRA impersonation alone were estimated to be more than 12 million CAD.
  • Most cases are unreported because of shame or fear and hence real figures are estimated to be more.

 Tricks of the Scammers

  1. Spoofed Cell numbers

The scammers tend to mess around with caller ID to show a valid CRA number. This gives weight and reduces your suspicion.

  1. Automated Voicemails

Or you can get a mechanized call informing you that you are being investigated and need to call back urgently. These voicemails are made to instill panic.

  1. Threatening Language

Scammers claim:

  • You have a warrant on your arrest.
  • You can be thrown out in a few hours.
  • Your hard-earned assets will be frozen.
  • No reputable agency will ever employ such approaches.
  1. Demands of Abnormal Payments

Among the possible demands, there is a gift card, Bitcoin, PayPal, or e-transfers. These payment methods are never accepted in the CRA.
