Premarital Background Checks

A premarital background check in Ontario verifies who your partner is before you marry, move in together or merge money. PiPro’s licensed investigators confirm identity and name history, prior marriages, public court and bankruptcy records, business interests and the claims your partner has made about their past. You get a confidential report that states what we confirmed, what we could not confirm and what deserves a closer look.

This is not a hunt for something to be suspicious about. It is the same step a careful buyer takes before a major purchase. It is also fast, discreet and based on lawful sources. If you already have a partner and suspect infidelity, our cheating spouse investigation page is the right place. If you are hiring an employee, see pre-employment screening.

Who asks for a premarital check

  • People who got engaged quickly and have not met the partner’s family, friends or colleagues
  • People who met a partner online and want to confirm identity before they travel, share an address or lend money
  • Parents or relatives who want reassurance before a wedding, with the couple’s knowledge
  • Anyone about to sign a marriage contract, buy a home or co-sign a loan with a partner
  • People whose partner’s story has changed, such as details about a past marriage, children, work or debts

What we check

Identity and name history

We confirm that the name, date of birth and address match what you have been told, and we look for name variants, aliases and previous addresses.

Marriage and family history

We look for evidence of previous marriages, divorces and court proceedings that connect to the person. This helps you understand whether a stated “single” or “divorced” status is consistent with public records.

Court and insolvency records

We search public civil and criminal court records and public bankruptcy and insolvency filings. These searches show disputes, judgments and financial distress that matter before you share a mortgage or a lease.

Business and property interests

We look for company directorships, business registrations and property ownership. People sometimes describe a business that does not exist, or hide interests that matter in a marriage contract.

Professional and public profile

We verify professional licences where a public register exists, review open source profiles and compare the story online with the story you were told.

Claims you ask us to test

You tell us what the partner has said about education, employment, income or family. We verify what can be verified from lawful sources and tell you plainly when we cannot.

What we do not do

  • We do not access private bank accounts, medical files, private messages or email.
  • We do not obtain a police record check without the person’s consent. Ontario’s Police Record Checks Reform Act, 2015 requires consent for a police record check, so if you want one, the partner has to request it.
  • We do not pull a credit report without a lawful basis and consent.
  • We do not make accusations. If something is unclear, we say so and do not fill the gap with suspicion.

What you receive

  • A summary of identity and name variants
  • Findings from public marriage, court, insolvency, corporate and property sources
  • A dated review of open source profiles
  • A list of claims we confirmed, claims we could not confirm and items that conflict with the record
  • A short set of suggested next steps, which may include questions to ask your partner or your lawyer

How a premarital check fits with Ontario family law

Ontario’s family law system treats marriage as a financial partnership, and many couples sign a marriage contract to set out what happens to property and debts. A contract works best when both people disclose their finances honestly. A background check does not replace that disclosure or independent legal advice. It gives you a second source, so you know what to ask and what to put in writing. If you later separate, our divorce and family investigation team can help.

How the process works

  1. Confidential consultation. We hear what you know, what you are unsure of and what decision you are facing.
  2. Information gathering. You provide the partner’s full name, date of birth, last known addresses and anything they have told you.
  3. Research. Our licensed investigators search public records and open sources. Most results arrive within days. Cases involving history outside Canada take longer.
  4. Report and debrief. We walk you through the findings and the limits of what we could confirm.

What to do with the results

A discrepancy is not proof of bad intent. People forget, feel shame or hold back for understandable reasons. Treat the report as a starting point for a calm conversation, ideally with a counsellor or lawyer. Do not use it to harass or threaten anyone, because that can create legal problems for you.

Why PiPro

We are a licensed Ontario agency that works discreetly across Toronto and the GTA. We use lawful sources and we report plainly. We also back that up with wider investigative research and open source intelligence skills when a file needs more depth. Under Ontario’s Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005, anyone who investigates people for a fee must be licensed, so confirm that before you hire anyone.
